Bathtime tips and safety

Mum and baby at bath time
Bath time can be a special bonding time for parents and babies, but it can also be nerve wracking in the beginning. Here are some tips to help keep your baby safe and happy, and hopefully give you the confidence to relax and enjoy it.
  • Make sure you've got time to give your baby your undivided attention. Be prepared to ignore the phone or the doorbell, or take your baby with you.

  • Get everything ready that you might need, and if using a Coocoose®, fasten it around your neck and waist.

  • Warm the room so that your baby doesn't get cold before, during or after the bath.

  • Run the water to the right depth and temperature before putting your baby in the bath. 2 to 3 inches is all you need, at about 37ºC so that it feels warm but not hot.

  • Keep your water heater set to a reasonable temperature - 49ºC/ 120ºF is warm enough for an adult shower. If you have it set higher, you could accidentally run a bath that's dangerously hot.

  • The safest way to put your baby into the bath is to lower them slowly, feet first. Support their neck and head with one hand and use the other to pour cupfuls of water of them to keep them warm.

  • Soap can dry out your baby's skin so it's best not to use too much. You can use a flannel or your hand to wash your baby's scalp and body, and damp cotton wool balls to gently wipe their eyes and face.

  • When you're ready to lift your baby out of the bath, unfasten the poppers behind your waist. Use one hand behind your baby's head and neck for support, and put your other hand under their bottom, with a gentle grasp around one thigh to stop them slipping.

  • Wrap and dry them straight away to keep them warm and happy – just what the Coocoose® was made for!
